Jenny’s Wedding is technically a timely and topical film about the struggles of coming out to your family (have you tried YouTube?), but casting Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel as a happy couple makes the movie feel like the best possible result of some Grey’s Anatomy -Gilmore Girls fan fiction.

In the film, Heigl plays the titular Jenny who is in a long-term relationship with her girlfriend, played by Bledel. When the two decide to marry, Jenny decides that it’s finally time to tell her conservative family the truth about her sexuality.

In the first trailer for the movie, Heigl’s character’s parents—played by Tom Wilkinson and Linda Emond—are determined to see their daughter married (did they see 27 Dresses?), but are caught off-guard when she announces that she is engaged—to the woman they always thought was just her roommate.

The film, from the writer who brought us Beaches, looks like an important exploration of the reality that while gay marriage is now legal in all 50 states (thanks, U.S. Supreme Court and Beyoncé!), men and women will still struggle with coming out to their conservative families unprepared for the paradigm shift. That said, wouldn’t it be so much better if Izzie Stevens left Seattle Grace still heartbroken over the death of Denny Duquette and decided to lose herself in the thrill of then-Senator Obama’s presidential campaign where she met girl reporter Rory Gilmore and the two fell in love? Just us?

Jenny’s Wedding opens in theaters on July 31 and arrives on V.O.D. August 1.
